[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حبس (haps, hapis, “a confining, an imprisoning, confinement, imprisonment”),[1][2] from Arabic حَبْس (ḥabs, “imprisonment, prison”), verbal noun of حَبَسَ (ḥabasa, “to imprison, to hold back”).[3]
