[edit]From Proto-Finnic *hëlma (compare Estonian hõlm), possibly borrowed either from Baltic (compare Lithuanian šelmuo (“ridge (of a roof)”)) or from Proto-Germanic *helmaz (“protective covering”) (compare Old English helm (“helmet, protection, covering”)).
