From Old Swedish køn, kyn, from Old Norse kyn, from Proto-Germanic *kunją, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (to produce). Cognate with English kin, Danish køn, Norwegian kjønn, Icelandic kyn, Dutch kunne, Gothic 𐌺𐌿𐌽𐌹 (kuni), and the borrowed Finnish word kunnia.
