Etymology[edit]

An old loan from a Germanic language, compare Proto-Germanic *blahjon ‎(“flock of wool”) and Old Norse blæja ("sheet", "blanket"). In most of the other Finnic languages the word also means a wedding gift; e.g. Votic lahja ("wedding gift"). Traditionally a sheet of cloth and/or other textiles would be given as gifts during a wedding.
