Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Czech obecný.[1][2] Sense 2 is a specialization of sense 6.[3] By surface analysis, obec +‎ -ny. First attested in 1539.[4] Displaced and doublet of obiecny, an inherited form.

According to Słownik frekwencyjny polszczyzny współczesnej (1990), obecny is one of the most used words in Polish, appearing 12 times in scientific texts, 45 times in news, 52 times in essays, 3 times in fiction, and 5 times in plays, each out of a corpus of 100,000 words, totaling 117 times, making it the 518th most common word in a corpus of 500,000 words.[5]
