Etymology
[edit]A derived word but the method of derivation is uncertain. Its stem is perhaps the unattested front-vowel variant of the duck-calling word ruc + -e (diminutive suffix). Another possibility is that it's from the stem of the dialectal receg (“to quack”) + -e (participle suffix). Its original form was rece.[1] Certain Slavic and other languages have similar words that may have formed independently of Hungarian. Compare Serbo-Croatian raca, Romani ratsoy, Albanian rosë, dialectal German Rätsche (“duck”), Romanian rață, Friulian raze, Occitan rit.[2]
