From Old Galician-Portuguese salvage, salvaje, from Old Occitan salvatge, salvatxe, sauvatge (cf. Catalan salvatge), from Vulgar Latin salvāticus, from Latin silvāticus (“of the woods”), from silva (“woods; forest”).
