[edit]From Middle High German stampfen, from Old High German stampfōn, from Proto-West Germanic *stampōn, from Proto-Germanic *stampōną, from Proto-Indo-European *stembʰ- (“to trample down”). Related to Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌼𐍀𐌾𐌰𐌽 (stampjan).
