[edit]From Middle High German süln, suln, soln, from Old High German *sullen, *solōn (attested in bisullen), from Proto-Germanic *sulwijaną, *sulwōną (“to soil, make dirty”), from Proto-Indo-European *sūl- (“thick liquid”). Cognate with English soil.
