From Proto-Vietic *sɛːk, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *saik ~ *siək (“to skin, peel”); cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] sɛːk⁷, Old Mon snāk (“two-edged sword”) (modern Mon သၞာ် (hnaik, “two-edged sword”)), Nyaheun saːk ("to tear"). Compare also tạch.
