    Verb

    [edit]

telefonieren (weak, third-person singular present telefoniert, past tense telefonierte, past participle telefoniert, auxiliary haben)

    1. (intransitive) to have a telephone call [with mit (+ dative) ‘with someone’]
Peter kommt gleich, er telefoniert noch mit seinen Eltern.
Peter is going to be here in a bit, he's still on call with his parents.
Ich habe mich schon mit Paula abgestimmt, wir haben vorhin telefoniert.
I already coordinated with Paula, we had a phone call earlier.

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • Telefonieren leaves unspecified who initiated the call, but implies a connection was made. For a specific person initating a phone call, the verb anrufen is used instead, but this could also include unsuccessful attempts at calling.
