From Old French tente, possibly from Vulgar Latin *tenta, from the feminine of tentus, perfect passive participle of tendō, or alternatively from *tenda, itself possibly a contraction of *tendita, feminine of a variant Vulgar Latin participle *tenditus (instead of tentus, perfect passive participle of Latin tendō). Compare Italian tenda, Portuguese tenda, Spanish tienda.
