Etymology
Of disputed origin. There are two equally possible theories:[1]
- From a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "trk" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. language; compare Proto-Turkic *tilmaç, Chuvash тӑлмач (tălmač). The origin of the Turkish words is unknown.
- From a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "sla" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. language; compare Slovene tolmač, Czech tlumač.
