From Proto-Vietic *k-loːk. Cognate with Muong tlốc. Compare trọc lốc.

The distribution of this word seems to be from southern Thanh Hoá, throughout the four North Central provinces south of Thanh Hoá, and some rural dialects of Huế.

Displaced by đầu in the major dialects.
