From Proto-Celtic *wregi- (wall, eclosure), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wreǵ- (close). Akin to Middle Irish fraig (wall), Middle Welsh ach-vre (wattled fence, palisade), Sanskrit [script needed] (vrajá-, wattle, fence).[1]
