Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *varjo (compare Estonian vari, Livonian vǭŗ), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *warjǭ or alternatively derived in Finnic from Proto-Germanic *warjaną (whence Finnish varjella, with a frequentative suffix, and Swedish värja (“to defend”)).
