From Middle Dutch verliesen, from Old Dutch *firliosan, from Proto-Germanic *fraleusaną. Cognate with German verlieren. Compare Ancient Greek λύω (lúō, “loose, untie”), Latin solvō (“dissolve”), English forlorn.
