From Middle English werkdai, werkedei, werkedai, from Old English weorcdæġ (workday), equivalent to work +‎ day. Cognate with West Frisian wurkdei (workday), Dutch werkdag (workday), German Low German Warkdag (workday), German Werktag (workday). See also workaday.
