Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish یارمق (yarmak, to split, rend), from Proto-Turkic *jār- (to split).[1] Akin to Proto-Mongolic *jara- (to split open, open wide) (Mongolian ярах (jarax, to cleave, thrust, draw open)).
