Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Within Greek some connect σῶμα (sôma, body). Starting from Proto-Indo-European *tuoh₂-ro-, Solmsen seeks connection with σῶς (sôs, safe, healthy, intact), also pleading against connection with σορός (sorós, cup, recipient). For the root, see Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (to swell). Compare also Old Armenian թուշ (tʿuš, cheek).
