From ܡܕܒܪܢܐ (m(ə)ḏabb(ə)rānā(ʾ), “leader”), from the root ܕ-ܒ-ܪ (d-b-r) related to leading + the abstract noun ending -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯāʾ).
