Etymology

    From Middle High German ūfgābe, ultimately a verbal noun from the ancestor of aufgeben. By surface analysis, auf (up) +‎ Gabe (gift, giving). Compare also Dutch opgave, which may have borrowed the meaning "task" from the German.
