- (uncountable) A dark-skinned grape variety used for red wine, developed as a hybrid (Helfensteiner × Heroldrebe) by August Herold in 1955 at the Staatliche Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Wein- und Obstbau Weinsberg (State Education and Research Institute for Viticulture and Pomology Weinsberg) in Württemberg, Germany.

Named for the autodidactic viticulturist Immanuel August Ludwig Dornfeld (1796–1869), progenitor of the Königliche Weinbauschule (Royal Viticultural School) in Weinsberg: Dornfeld + -er.
