[edit] Usage notes

  • The word aircraft is a countable noun, but with the same plural form as singular; hence "one aircraft", "two aircraft", etc. However, it is becoming more and more common to hear the incorrect usage "aircrafts" among both non-native speakers of English and those who work in the aviation industry.
  • vehicles that fly ballistically, propelled solely by rockets, are not usually referred to as aircraft, unlike rocket planes
  • An aircraft with a propulsion system is also termed airplane/aeroplane.
