  1. to swap, to exchange something for (= pret) something else (to give something and to take something else in its place)
    apmainīt bibliotēkā grāmatas — to exchange books in the library
    par naudu ceļā neko bēgļiem nedodot, bet rīsu, mannu, sāli un manufaktūtu varot apmainīt pret sviesti, pienu, gaļu, maizi — via money the fugitives, it seems, could get nothing on their way, but rice, semolina, salt and textile products one could exchange for butter, milk, meat, and bread
  2. to change something, to replace something with (= pret) something else
    apmainīt izdegušo spuldzi — to change a burned (light) bulb
    apmainīt tukšo spoli pret jaunu — to replace an empty reel with a new one
    apmainīt puķēm ūdeni — to change the flower water
    baterija kalpo divus gadus; tad tā jāapmaina — the battery works (for) two years; then one must replace it
    viņš izšāva visu pistoles aptveri, apmainīja un šāva atkal — he fired (his) gun's whole magazine, changed it (= reloaded), and fired again
  3. (of ideas, thoughts) to exchange (to say what one wants to say to someone and then listen to what s/he wants to say)
