From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bʔutei; present tense forms are from Proto-Indo-European *h₁es- (to be), suppletive stem forms derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuh₂- (to become) (see Proto-Indo-European *bʰew-). Cognate with Lithuanian būti, Old Church Slavonic бꙑти (byti).
