Etymology

Inherited from the Mediaeval Byzantine Greek βασιλιάς < βασιλέας (vasiléas) with synizesis [ʎa] to avoid hiatus. From Ancient Greek βασιλεύς (basileús, king, leader, prince, emperor)[1], the word since Mycenaean times, of uncertain etymon; possibly of Anatolian origin.[2] Also see βασίλισσα (basílissa, queen).
