From earlier ξένϝος (xénwos), from Proto-Hellenic *ksénwos. Compare to Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬥𐬀𐬎 (xšnau). Also reflected in Albanian huaj (alien), from Proto-Albanian *ksōn(w)ja.
