Etymology

[edit]

Disputed. The LIV traces the word back to a root of the shape Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w-, which it separates from the more-established homophonous root *peh₂w- (few, little),[1] but Beekes leaves the etymology open, saying that there are no certain cognates outside Greek.[2] The word has also been linked to Proto-Slavic *pustìti (to let go).[3]
