From the modern σταματώ (stamató) σταματ- + -άω (-áo), inherited from the mediaeval Byzantine Greek σταματῶ (stamatô), a metaplasm of σταματίζω (stamatízō), from the neuter noun στάμα (stáma, seat), from stem στα- of the Ancient Greek ἵσταμαι (hístamai), passive of ἵστημι (hístēmi).[1][2]
