Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic вънѣ (vŭně). Cognate with вон (von), Slovene vənè (outside) (tonal orthography), vèn (out) (tonal orthography), Czech vně (outside), ven (out). See вон (von) for further Slavic cognates. According to Vasmer, most likely related to Sanskrit वन (vána, forest), dialectal [script needed] (vánē, in the forest), although also sometimes compared with Sanskrit [script needed] (vínā, without, except for), Old Prussian wins (air), winna (outward), winnen (weather, accusative).
