Inherited from Old Ruthenian сприꙗти (sprijati), from Old East Slavic съприꙗти (sŭprijati), from Proto-Slavic *prijàti (to please, to favour), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *prīˀjā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *priH-eh₂-ti, from *priHós (dear, beloved). By surface analysis, с- (s-) +‎ прия́ти (pryjáty) (obsolete). Compare Polish sprzyjać.
