Etymology[edit]

Composed of the root անկ- (ank-), from Proto-Indo-European *sn̥gʷ-, zero-grade of *sengʷ- (to sink, fall), +‎ -ան- (-an-); cognate with Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną and Old Armenian ընկենում (ənkenum).[1][2][3]
