Etymology[edit]

Composed of the root անկ- ‎(ank-), from Proto-Indo-European *sn̥gʷ- ‎(to sink, fall), +‎ -ան- ‎(-an-). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną. The root is also used independently as անկ ‎(ank), յանգ ‎(yang), ցանկ ‎(cʿank). See further in ընկենում ‎(ənkenum).
