Etymology 1[edit]

Akin to Old Armenian օճառ (ōčaṙ).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (sharp)? If so, then the Armenian word is likely not cognate. However, if Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾp̄cʾl, ʾp̄zʾl /abzār/, instrument, means; spice) really did have the secondary meaning of "spice", then the *h₂eḱ- theory becomes much less tenable.”
