Borrowed from Persian ایران(irân), from Middle Persian 𐭠𐭩𐭥𐭠𐭭(ʾyr ʾn /Ērān/). Replaced فارس(Fārs, Persia) during the 20th century, a request of Reza Shah Pahlavi to the international community. Compare Pashto ایران(erān), Punjabi ایران(ayrān), Uyghur ئىران(iran), Kazakh Иран (Iran), Chinese 伊朗 (yīlǎng), all borrowings from Persian.
