Transferred from the name of the Mount Lebanon mountain range, in turn from Proto-West Semitic *laban- (“white”), also the etymon of لَبَن (laban, “milk”) and Hebrew לָבָן (lāḇān, “white”). Compare Biblical Hebrew לְבָנוֹן (ləḇānôn).
