Transferred from the name of the Mount Lebanon mountain range, in turn from Proto-West Semitic *laban- (white), also the etymon of لَبَن (laban, milk) and Hebrew לָבָן (lāḇān, white). Compare Biblical Hebrew לְבָנוֹן (ləḇānôn).
