Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish قالی (qalı), from Persian خالی (xâli, carpet), itself from Old Armenian Կարին (Karin), a city which was famed for rugs.

Borrowed from Old Armenian Կարին (Karin), a city which, spelled in Arabic قَالِيقَلَا (qālīqalā), was famed for rugs. Compare Arabic زَرْبِيَّة (zarbiyya, rug) supposedly being from the name of Azerbaijan.
