From Proto-Pathan *kəδáy < *kədáγ, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *kadág,[1] from Proto-Iranian *katákah (house), diminutive of *kátah. Compare Persian کده (kade, house), and Old Armenian քաղաք (kʻałakʻ), an Iranian borrowing.
