Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀖𑁄𑀟𑀕 (ghoḍaga), from Sanskrit घोटक (ghoṭaka), likely from Proto-Dravidian *kHutt- (horse). Cognate with Punjabi گھوڑا (ghoṛā), Sindhi گهوڙو (ghoṛo), Marathi घोडा (ghoḍā), Gujarati ઘોડો (ghoḍo), Bengali ঘোড়া (ghōṛa) and Odia ଘୋଡ଼ା (ghoṛa).
