Etymology[edit]

From the root ܘ-ܬ-ܒ ‎(w-t-b) related to sitting. Compare Hebrew מוֹשָׁב ‎(môšāḇ). The sense of "part of the liturgy" is a calque of Ancient Greek κάθισμα ‎(káthisma).
