From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kʰumbʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰumbʰás. Cognate with Avestan 𐬑𐬎𐬨𐬠𐬀(xumba), Tajik хум (xum), Yagnobi [script needed] (humb).

  1. a jar, pitcher, water-pot, ewer, small water-jar.
  2. an urn in which the bones of a dead person are collected.
  3. (astrology, astronomy) The sign of the zodiac Aquarius.
  4. a measure of grain (equal to twenty द्रोणs, a little more than three bushels and three gallons ; commonly called a comb ; some make it two द्रोणs or sixty-four Seers).
  5. the frontal globe or prominence on the upper part of the forehead of an elephant (there are two of these prominences which swell in the rutting season).
