Learned borrowing from Sanskrit क्षण (kṣaṇa). Compare Rajasthani छण (chaṇ), Gujarati ક્ષણ (kṣaṇ), Chinese 剎那/刹那 (chànà). Doublet of छिन (chin).

Related to अक्षि (akṣi, “eye”).[1] Compare German Augenblick (“instant, moment”) for similar semantic development from the same root.
