[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰáyȷ́ʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéyǵʰ-o-s, from *dʰeyǵʰ- (“to mold, to knead”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬉𐬰𐬀 (daēza), Ancient Greek τεῖχος (teîkhos), English dough, Latin fingō (whence English figure, fiction etc).
