From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴬ (to hate), from Middle Chinese (MC tsong). Cognate with Isan ซัง, Lao ຊັງ (sang), Northern Thai ᨩᩢ᩠ᨦ, ᦋᧂ (tsang), Tai Dam ꪋꪰꪉ, Shan ၸင်း (tsáng), Zhuang caengz.
