Etymology
From Sanskrit नील (nīla, “dark blue”); possibly via Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "mkh-okm" is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF., Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "mkh-okm" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E.. Cognate with Modern Khmer នឹល (nɨl); Lao ນິນ (nin), ນິລະ (ni la).
The last sense was coined by King Bhumibol Adulyadej around 1965 due to the fact that the term sounds like the first syllable of the fish's name in English, Nile tilapia, and that it reflects the colour of the fish's skin as well.
