From (ふつ)() (futsuka, two days) + () (yoi, intoxication, drunkenness, the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (you, to be intoxicated, to get drunk)).[1][2][3][4]

First cited to a text from roughly 1500.[1]
