The spelling is an example of jukujikun (熟字訓), from Chinese 希臘/希腊 (Xīlà) which derives from Ancient Greek Ἑλλάς (Hellás), not Latin Graecia from which Japanese ギリシャ (Girisha)/ギリシア (Girishia) derives.
