Cognate with 躑躅 (OC *deɡ doɡ), 踟躕 (OC *de do), 躊躇 (OC *du da), all meaning "walking slowly or with difficulty → hesitant".

From Middle Chinese 彳亍 (MC trhjek trhjowk). The characters arose by splitting (“to walk”) in two; traditionally the halves have been glossed "left foot" and "right foot".[1]
