Etymology 2[edit]

According to the Stele of Record of Tianfei Showing Her Presence and Power (天妃靈應之記碑) in Fujian detailing the Ming-era, Zheng He-led treasure voyages, the zebra, or the “speckled fu-lu” (福祿), along with the lion (獅子), were exotic tributes by the “State of Mu-gu-du-shu” (木骨都束國), i.e. modern-day Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. This word is thus a phono-semantic matching, making use of the semantics of Etymology 1 to adapt a foreign name, likely Somali farow (zebra); compare Arabic فَرَأ(faraʾ), فَراء‎(farāʾ, onager; wild ass).
