Etymology
[edit]The word is translated from Greek κατηγορία (katigoría), which was borrowed by Japanese philosopher Inoue Tetsujirō in the 1881 work 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, “Dictionary of Philosophy”) as a translation of English category, based on the phrase 洪範九疇 in the Book of Documents (《尚書》 or 《書經》》).[1][2]
